1981 Original New York Checker Cab 2nd Owner. I am the 2nd owner of this Original New York Checker Cab. I bought this from a family in New Jersey that had this car in storage since 1985. It was bought Brand new in 1981 by a gentleman that had his own New York City Taxi medallion (he was in his 60s when he bought this Checker) He was an owner operator for 40 years and drove strictly checker cabs. He drove the cab for about 2 years straight and for a handful of times until 1985 and then retired. He passed and the checker was kept in the family and always garaged and used very limitedly until I purchased the car in 2003.
We used the car for a promotion for the U2 Tribute Band “Wide Awake In America” for a summer season. The car is in excellent shape original stripes paint etc, original taxi meter, no rips in the seats, 122,400 miles, jump seats functional, great 229ci Chevy motor, turbo 400 trans, Dana 44 rear axel, tilt wheel, am-fm CD player, very tight front end, power rear door locks, tilt wheel.
This is one of the most cleanest Original Checker cab in existence today. There are a few non original parts like the steering wheel, side view mirrors. This is not a converted checker marathon. It has all heavy duty welding for the engine cross member. The speedometer was changed due to the fact of a bad cable about 400 miles ago. I purchased a new old stock speedometer from Lou’s Auto body in Brooklyn, NY a checker specialist. Also another piece of interesting Nostalgia….a few days after I picked up the car I was going through the trunk and found the original change maker for the driver……it had all the change still in it untouched. See picture below. Out of respect for the past owner I never removed the original change that is in the change maker.
