1979 Checker Marathon Taxi – Rare & Unique w/Documented History. This car was originally owned by the president of Yellow Cab Company and driven for his own personal use, with 54,000 documented miles.

Many of us have seen images of Checker Taxis in movies or magazines, but few of us have ever seen one in person. These vehicles were manufactured in Kalamazoo, Michigan and were used almost exclusively as taxis in New York City and other major cities across the USA. They were not glitzy chrome laden vehicles. Instead, they were built like tanks to withstand brutal stop-and-go driving conditions. They became and iconic figure in New York City. When the final Checker Taxi ceased operations in July 1999, it received as much fanfare as any event ever held in New York. They used a variety of mechanical components throughout the years.

This particular model has a Dana 60 rear end, a Chevy 235 6-cylinder motor, power front disc brakes, and a Turbo 400 Hydra-Matic transmission. Less than 4,000 of these were built annually. They were generally driven until they couldn’t drive anymore and then scrapped. This explains why less than 2,000 Checkers of all types and years remain in existence today. This car was originally owned by the president of Yellow Cab Company and driven for his own personal use. It has 54,000 documented miles and we can proudly say that this is a two-owner piece of automotive history.
