-In 1965 Engines switched from Continental inline-6 to Chevrolet OHV-6 and small-block V8s
-In 1965, Checker built 6,086 cars. Only 930 were civilian models (i.e. Marathons)
-Car was originally purchased in California and stored in Arizona. No major humid climates.
-Car comes with loads of options from the factory including:
Automatic transmission, Power brakes, Power steering, Radio, Stainles steel wheel covers (in great shape), and a WORKING A/C unit
-Shorewood Green is the official color name.
-No Dents, minor scratches
Maintenance recently preformed:
-Oil changed
-Air filter replaced
-Battery replaced
-Carburetor rebuilt
-Replaced transmission pan gasket
-Alternator serviced
-Replaced starter
-Spark plugs replaced
-Breaks serviced
-Replaced oil pan gasket (Pan cleaned)
This 1965 Checker Marathon is in great shape. A three owner car (technically two owner) The original owner willed it to her grandson who time capsuled it in a storage for nearly 20 years and then we got a hold of her. She has been given full maintenance (with records) and is once more a running car. Engine and all parts are original with matching numbers. The interior is all original except the front seat fabric, but is period correct. It is the original paint, with a touch up job done in the early 1990’s.
Checkers will forever be remembered as New York City’s iconic taxi cab. They were produced up until 1982 when Checker threw in the towel on making cars due to low sales, out of date design, and worn out stamping dies. Think about it, they stamped the same panels day after day for 20 years! Many of these cabs were used up and replaced over the years with just a few hanging on for old times sake. However, by 2010, there were no more Checker cabs roaming the streets of New York City.

While most people assume Checker was just a cab factory, they were not! Checker always offered their cars to the general public, with varying trim levels too. Technically they didn’t advertise this until 1958 or so starting with a dealership in NYC. These privately owned cars tend to be in much better shape for obvious reasons. Really though, it kind of makes sense to go for a Checker. They were large, comfortable, and reliable, undeniably American.
CHECKER CARS ARE BACK IN PRODUCTION: Thanks to the Low-Volume Motor Vehicle Manufacturers Act of 2015, the revamped Checker Motor Cars will shift its focus from restoring old Checker taxi cab cars to building two new models and retrofitting old models with kits designed to modernize old cars. The reborn company is based in Haverhill, Massachusetts, and it was functioning as a resource for Checker taxi owners to get the parts and restoration services they needed to keep their iconic old-school cabs on the road. However, the company sees an opportunity to sell new models.
